Our History

The Graduate Program in Communication was authorized to operate at master’s degree level in December 2007, beginning its activities in March 2008, with the fundamental goal of strengthening research and teaching in the field of Communication at the local level.

Initially, the Program defined its area of concentration as “Communication and Languages”, aiming to integrate the fundamental principles of the communication field and its languages with the cultural references of contemporary society. In 2018, the Program was authorized to award doctoral degrees, with the first class beginning in 2019. This expansion was accompanied by a shift in the area of concentration, which has since been called “Media and Communication Processes”.

The establishment of the Graduate Program continued the University’s nearly 60-year history of training communication professionals at undergraduate level and for 30 years at graduate level, offering programs in Communication and Image Theories, and more recently, in Audiovisual and Electronic Media and Scientific Journalism. These initiatives were key in qualifying professionals and researchers in the field; however, they were primarily focused on preparing students for the professional market. The creation of the Graduate Program in Communication (master’s and doctoral degree) aimed to stimulate academic research and teaching, filling a gap in higher education in the state of Ceará and the surrounding region.

Since its implementation, efforts have been made to evaluate the dynamics and relevance of the research conducted within each line of study, in order to identify areas of convergence between projects. The Program strives for a more dynamic and less segmented approach to training, while still respecting the specificities of its lines of research. The goal is to achieve better outcomes in the education of master’s students and, consequently, stronger performance in the Program’s four-year evaluation.

The collaboration between these lines of research — focusing on the intersections between contemporary communication processes, socio-cultural practices, and their relationship with the media — demonstrates the interdependence and complementarity of the Program’s foundational research areas. These lines encompass both the internal organization of communication processes and their socio-cultural implications.
